Apple
Since its foundation in a Californian garage in 1976, Apple expanded massively and became one of the most valuable companies in the world. The company started its origins in the PC industry with the Macintosh, but soon entered other segments of the consumer electronics market. Today, the iPhone is the most profitable Apple product, although Mac, iPad, wearables, and services also contribute to its high revenues. Aiming at innovation, Apple invests every year in research and development, with its latest hardware product, an AR headset, released in 2024.
Samsung
Apple’s biggest rival in the consumer electronics industry is the South Korean tech giant Samsung. Founded in 1938 as a trading company, it developed in several sectors, including electronics and insurance, recording revenues in excess of 200 billion U.S. dollars over recent years. Despite Samsung being active in several markets across multiple divisions, it is today best known for its consumer tech products. Smartphones, tablets, and TVs are among the most popular. Samsung sits as the leading smartphone vendor, holding a market share of over 20 percent through 2022.
The center-right EPP grouping are set to win the most seats in the 2024 European Parliament elections, with a provisional 186 seats of 720 seats won, followed by the center-left S&D grouping at 135 seats. Although centrist parties broadly held their ground against anti-establishment movements, right-wing populist movements achieved key victories in certain countries. In France, the far-right National Rally party, associated with the Identity and Democracy group, won the most seats in the country at 30, while in Italy, the right-wing ECR group won 24 out of 76 seats.

Downloads of the social and photo app Cara skyrocketed. Launched on October 23, 2023, Cara is a social and photo app for artists, photographers, and illustrators to share their creativity online. In the first days of June 2024, the Cara app recorded approximately 314,000 downloads across the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Cara provides an ethical space for art consumption and has chosen not to host AI-generated work. The platform, which bootstraps thanks to the efforts of artist and activist Jingna Zhang, has grown rapidly into an alternative to conventionally popular social media.
The number of international tourist arrivals worldwide increased in 2023 compared to the previous year. That said, it remained still below the figure reported in 2019, before the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. After declining with the onset of the health crisis to roughly 406 million, the lowest figure recorded since 1989, global inbound tourist arrivals showed strong signs of recovery in the following years, totaling 1.3 billion in 2023.
Europe is the most popular destination for international tourismEurope is the global region that attracts the highest number of international tourists. While inbound tourist arrivals in Europe rose significantly in 2023 over the previous year, they did not catch up yet with pre-pandemic levels. The biggest apparel brand in the world
The global sports apparel market is highly fragmented, with basic discount brands to high-end fashion name brands competing for market position. U.S.-based Nike is the world’s leading brand in athletic footwear and apparel, and the world's most valuable clothing brand in general. Nike has a higher global revenue than its main competitors, adidas and Puma, put together. North America is a key market for Nike, as close to half of its global revenue is generated there each year. Much of Nike's success can be attributed to the brand’s marketing campaign as well as sponsorship agreements with celebrity athletes and professional sports teams.
Adidas and Puma
Adidas and Puma used to be one company named Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, established by two brothers, Adolf and Rudolf Dassler. After a disagreement between the two brothers, the company split, creating the two widely known sporting brands, Adidas and Puma. Adidas is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe, and the second largest in the world, just behind Nike, with a brand value of approximately 15.7 billion U.S. dollars. Just as with Nike, footwear is the most important category for adidas. In 2023, over 50 percent of the adidas Group's net sales were generated by the footwear category.
Puma, also one of the globe's leading sporting goods brand, has the long-term mission of becoming the most desirable sport lifestyle company in the world. Europe and the Americas are the most profitable markets for Puma, as these regions accounted for about 80 percent of Puma’s consolidated sales. Describing itself as the 'blue mountains', Puma has been trying to incorporate more edge, creativity, and uniqueness into their designs with their collaborations with celebrities and fashion designers. This is a common strategy amongst these leading sports brands, as they aim to maintain their share of the market by broadening their product lines.
Apple, Samsung and LG are the leading smartphone OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in the United States as of March 2024. Apple holds the highest market share with 53.1 percent, a slight decrease from their share in January 2024.
Consistent growth in global smartphone users
The number of smartphone users worldwide has consistently increased in recent years. This growth in smartphone users is forecast to continue, reaching over 7.5 billion by 2026. The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak was forecasted to reduce the global smartphone unit shipments in 2020. At the end of 2020, it was possible to see that the number of smartphone units shipped in 2020 had decreased compared to previous years. However, smartphone shipment reached its peak in 2016 and has steadily declined since.
In May 2024, one gallon of diesel cost an average of 3.82 U.S. dollars in the United States. That was a decrease compared to the previous month, and also lower than the same month the year prior.
Diesel prices rose significantly throughout the last two years due to supply constraints in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war and transportation issues related to low water levels on the Mississippi river. The usage of distillate fuel oil began in the 1930s, but until further development in the 1960s, diesel vehicles were mostly applied to commercial use only. In the U.S., diesel-powered cars remain a fairly small portion of the automobile market and diesel consumption is far lower than gasoline consumption. In general, gasoline also tends to be more widely available than diesel fuel and usually sells for a lower retail price. However, diesel engines have better fuel economy than gasoline engines, and, as such, tend to be used for large commercial vehicles.
Cabo Verde recorded the highest electricity price for households in Africa. As of March 2024, one kilowatt-hour costs around 0.31 U.S. dollars in the country. Kenya and Mali followed, with households paying 0.22 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Gabon, and Togo also recorded higher prices for electricity on the continent. On the other hand, Angola, Ethiopia, and Sudan registered the lowest prices for electric energy in Africa.
In the first quarter of 2024, the office vacancy rate in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia, was the highest, with a rate of around 18 percent. The central business district of Sydney had an office vacancy rate of 14.3 percent in comparison.
