Something I’ve learnt in the recent years is that software development has an impact on the environment. The way a tech team approaches the code-writing of a software product can affect energy usage, which determines the overall carbon footprint of the company and ultimately, the industry. One of the biggest culprits of “unsustainable” software development is inefficiency - which is present in the entire development process, ranging from the writing of the code itself to testing. Here are some tips to reduce the energy consumption while producing more efficient code: - Tackle code bloat head on by reviewing its root causes - Refactor code regularly - Promote and implement efficient code-writing guidelines - Use scheduling to help put developer and test environments in sleep mode when the developers are not working What are your thoughts on sustainable IT and tech practices? Here's another consideration if you want to build your own app - choosing between a native and hybrid app. What's the difference between the two? TLDR: Native apps are built for a single platform (iOS or Android), using the platform’s language. In contrast, a hybrid app is developed using multiple technologies and can run on various platforms. Making the choice on what to build really boils down to your needs and resources. Native apps tend to offer better performance and user experience, but that also means they are more costly to develop and maintain. Hybrid apps can be completed faster and are usually more cost-effective, but they may not run as smoothly.
