Andrew Grove 1 of the 3 co-founders of Intel Corp

In September, 1936, Hungarian Prime Minister Gyula G�mb�s informed German officials he intended to establish a one party fascist state in Hungary. That same month, on September 2nd, Andr�s Grof was born in Budapest to secular Jewish parents. The first country to send a head of state to meet with Hitler, Hungary was dependent on the Germans for more than half its raw materials and markets. It would later send troops to the Eastern Front to fight alongside the Germans. The Soviets killed 40,000 of them and wounded 70,000 more. Later, German fears that Hungary might sign a separate peace with the Soviets or the West, led to a March 1944 German takeover of the Country. With that began the full scale deportation of Hungarian Jews to the death camps.

In the end, despite Hungarian government efforts to avert those deportations, only 260,500 of Hungary's 725,000 Jews survived the War. Grof and his mother were among them. They had changed their names (Grof became Andr�s Malesevics) and were taken in by Christians. Grof's father survived as well (but just barely) in the Eastern Labor Camps. Grof was not yet 9. It was his second near fatal experience. Five years earlier he almost died of Scarlet Fever.

Two Confess Involvement in Attack on Orthodox Jew

Melbourne, Australia — Two men accused of an alleged antisemitic attack on an Orthodox Jew earlier this month have confessed their part in the incident, the AJN has learned.

The men, who are both players with Ocean Grove Football Club, last week told club officials they participated in the attack on Menachem Vorchheimer after an end-of-season trip to Caulfield Racecourse on October 14.

Menachem Vorchheimer: Not nervous of the police union, the chief commissioner's office or the government.

There's the strange case of the policeman accused of long-term bullying who has been on fully paid leave for two years. It seems he's lucky enough to have a doctor willing to declare his ''patient'' unfit to face questions about the alleged offences. We hope the (alleged) bully's victims are being looked after nearly as well.

Jews as High Technology Entrepreneurs and Managers

Jews have traditionally been seen as prominent in such industries as finance, merchandising, apparel, textiles, entertainment, media, and publishing. And in most of them, Jews were true pioneers. They played leading roles as those industries emerged on the scene.

Their disproportionate importance to the contemporary world of 24/7 competitive high technology is less well known, but they have flourished there as well. It plays to their strengths. High technology demands a solid grounding in the underlying science or engineering and that typically calls for college, and sometimes a post graduate education. Demographically, Jews are better educated than their peers. An earlier chapter pointed out the high levels of Jewish enrollment at leading public and private universities.
